Background of the Study
Foodborne illnesses represent a significant public health challenge globally, contributing to high morbidity and mortality rates, particularly in developing countries. These illnesses are caused by the consumption of contaminated food or water, leading to infections or toxic reactions. The scale of an outbreak can vary from a localized group of cases to a widespread public health emergency. In hospitals, foodborne illness outbreaks require prompt identification, management, and containment to prevent further spread and ensure the safety of patients and healthcare providers.
Nurses are on the frontline in responding to foodborne illness outbreaks. They are responsible for identifying symptoms, providing appropriate care, and educating patients about food safety. However, preparedness to handle such outbreaks varies among healthcare institutions, influenced by factors such as training, resources, and institutional protocols. Ogun State University Teaching Hospital, a major referral center in Ogun State, faces the challenge of ensuring that its nurses are adequately prepared to manage large-scale foodborne illness outbreaks. This study aims to investigate the preparedness of nurses at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital in responding to such public health crises.
Statement of the Problem
The preparedness of healthcare workers, particularly nurses, to respond to large-scale foodborne illness outbreaks is critical in minimizing the impact on public health. Despite the importance of this preparedness, many hospitals, especially in resource-limited settings, face challenges in ensuring that their nurses are sufficiently trained and equipped. Ogun State University Teaching Hospital may be facing similar challenges, which could result in suboptimal responses to foodborne illness outbreaks. This study seeks to evaluate the preparedness of nurses at the hospital for responding to such public health emergencies.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of preparedness of nurses at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital in managing large-scale foodborne illness outbreaks.
2. To identify the factors that influence the preparedness of nurses at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital in responding to foodborne illness outbreaks.
3. To recommend strategies to improve the preparedness of nurses at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital for large-scale foodborne illness outbreaks.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of preparedness of nurses at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital for managing large-scale foodborne illness outbreaks?
2. What factors influence the preparedness of nurses at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital for responding to foodborne illness outbreaks?
3. What strategies can improve the preparedness of nurses at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital for large-scale foodborne illness outbreaks?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital are inadequately prepared for managing large-scale foodborne illness outbreaks.
2. Lack of training and resources significantly affect the preparedness of nurses at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital in responding to foodborne illness outbreaks.
3. Improved training and resource allocation will enhance the preparedness of nurses at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital for large-scale foodborne illness outbreaks.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in emergency, infectious disease, and public health departments at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital. The limitations of the study include potential biases in self-reported data on preparedness and the inability to control for all external variables that may influence the preparedness of nurses.
Definitions of Terms
